One Geezer’s Opinion

Al Shane

These are the waning days of my sixth decade, so it’s official: I’m an old geezer! Never thought I’d see the day, but here I am. Where’d time go?

Waning a bit myself I’m thinking (Geezers do this) is there a reckoning afoot? Will this crazy election start the last faltering moments of this great land? Are my demise and America’s joined at the hip, ruining per- perhaps the best damn place mankind ever built? Or is this just another boomer recalling his back-in-the-day?

Going back to FDR, even Wilson, a persistent, growing minority has always felt it wasn’t fair some had so much while others struggled. Today they’re outraged a few million folks get to be rich like Gates and Oprah but we others (325 million?) just do OK. You know, place to sleep, food on the table, clothes on our backs, kids in college, couple cars and big screens. How many countries can boast poverty (unfairness?) like this?

Come to think of it most of us don’t live in tents, mud huts or dilapidated, bombed out buildings, nor do we go barefoot, drink tainted water, or have Taliban or Isil chasing us about. What gives? Do the angst-heads really think we’re all so miserable?

Denmark, Sweden et al offer a standard of living close to ours but with cloying mediocrity and for small populations. Here there’s a robust middle class numbering hundreds of millions, with opportunities galore. Do you see that in China, Russia, India or Brazil, pinheads?  Why can’t you see how your statist mischief and munificence are dismantling brick by brick our fantastic dream factory, our shining city on a hill?

Sixty-nine is soon seventy so I’ll get to it. This is the best darn place to live on the planet, but utopians gaze askance at our darker corners unable to see, let alone understand, that we are a magical place unlike any other. To them it’s not good enough, so they challenge all aspects of our society, the value of our constitution, even God. They don’t get how, If we turn our back on these fundamental concepts/beliefs and leave the path of our hard won success we risk the inevitable calamities of societal experimentation, inviting into our house political systems and ideologies that have failed countless times before. For what? A few ill-advised betterments in an already wondrous land?

This country was born of hard work and self-reliance, not shirking and cloaking one’s self in irresponsibility. Ignorant, foolish youth herald a socialist; women and minorities admire a statist who ignores protocols, proprieties, prohibitions or punishments; angry disenfranchised conservatives/libertarians proclaim a schoolyard bully their champion. Old UnAmerican; false prophet chasing legacy; rough tycoon of dubious intent. All coarsen the dialogue, muddling our sensibilities. We put these up as would be savior’s of our fracturing republic? Entrusting any will consign and hasten us toward liberty’s denouement and freedom’s abattoir.

Waning days indeed. We have met the enemy and it is us! We sell ourselves idiot imposters. In befuddlement we adorn their visage with lipstick and give them serious consideration. Woe is me, woe this old son as comes nigh his three score ten . . .

    Dear Sir,

I’m am an American of Mexican decent, third generation from La Verne, Ca. I am very aware of the special miracle that this country is, and its Constitutional directives mandated by God and insured by patriots. What law but Gods could establish Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness as every citizens right, as an individual! Revolutionary! As revolutionary as Christ saying all are loved by the one God, equally. No king above another, no my god could kick your gods ass.
We are witness to the fall of the US. Apathy, willful ignorance, gluttony and shameless consumption. I do feel the reckoning, Trump is the over reaction of a frustrated majority that has endured far too long with no voice. The opposition is one step away from falling under the category “against all…foreign and domestic”The Republicans and the Democrats are in the same family and many know it. I feel hopeless. If only Ben Sasse was running for President!
Thank you for your blog, it’s always motivating to read!

Thanks for your comments and yes, I think we’re in real trouble. Too many on our side have, for whatever reason, lost their way, forgotten their fundamental values and
basically become apathetic to the politics of the moment.

It’s one thing dealing with the opposition and their nutty ideas. You can meet these head on intellectually.
But when your own side starts with the “PC” craziness and the very law itself becomes vulnerable to whoever is in power, we lose our moorings and drift aimlessly along
a proverbial waterway to political hell.

No standards, no protocols or proprieties, no absolutes
all will lead to no country. America will become legend
if not fantasy of the way things once were . . .

Thanks again for your comments and for reading my blog.

      Stand Firm
      Fight the good fight
