Convention Afterthoughts

I liked the way Trump described how bad things have gotten under this administration, reminding us it will be more of the same with Clinton. I particularly liked his comments about corruption, how this is the worst it’s been in his lifetime. Also his promises to re-build our military, lower taxes, repeal Obamacare, re-negotiate most of our trade deals, reduce regulations to rejuvenate energy production, reinforce and strengthen our police departments and, most critical, revamp our immigration system and seal the border.

He claimed all this would result in more jobs, a safer homeland and make America great again. These ideas and sentiments ring loud and clear in conservative ears, giving us hope we really can turn things around. But, it would have been even better if a few more things had been said, such as 1) he will balance our budget before his term is over 2) eliminate organized terrorism throughout the world 3) make English our official language 4) reduce the size of government 5) re-assert the essentialness of constitutionalism, taking steps to insure no future president can ignore or circumvent the separation of powers.

This last item will require amendments to the constitution as well as a concerted effort to re-federalize our governmental structure effectively returning power to the states. This in turn will require a firm commitment to organize and establish a Convention of States, which duly assembled will have the power to check or veto all federal acts, including legislative, executive and judicial. This power was envisioned by the founders and must be reasserted in these perilous times.

In conclusion, Trump offered many good ideas, but details were sketchy and a firm,  constitutionally conservative discourse was missing. We do not know if this is because he’s not intellectually driven or he simply does not subscribe to conservatism’s fundamentals. The former would be workable given he has an open mind; the latter problematic in that his whole political persona would be in doubt regarding fiscal discipline, social engineering and governmental purview.

Conservatives want a solid democratic republic, controlled by our constitutionally structured government and anchored in free-market capitalism. We want a smaller federal bureaucracy, more power with the states, less regulation and government intrusion. We believe people should have say in laws affecting their daily lives, interactions and personal behaviors. The courts, including Supreme Court, don’t have the authority to legislate/mandate these. They should be settled on a state by state basis.

I wish he had talked more about the politicization of the FBI, Justice Dept and Supreme Court; more about the bias and cronyism infecting those bodies; more about term limits and age ceilings, and more aboutre-investigating Hillary’s emails and Benghazi. But you can’t have everything. You make do with what you’ve got.

We’ve got Trump. We liked his words and message though spoken un-evenly in an elevated monotone. We know he’s not a gifted orator and does better in boardrooms than convention centers. But he’s still our guy and we’ll listen to him every day of the week over Hillary.

It’s time we believe he’ll get this job done, believe in our heart of hearts he will RETURN AMERICA TO GREATNESS!
